We know it takes a village to raise a child and that this is a very close knit community. Therefore, we want school and community members to recognize the character traits we are focusing on each month and to give us feedback on what you see. Please look for posters in local businesses that feature the current trait on which we are focusing. We may focus on some traits for two or three months depending on the feedback we receive. The character traits are: caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility, and trustworthy. Our first focus trait is caring. Caring is tolerance, kindness, empathy, and friendliness. Students will hear and see caring modeled and spoken throughout their day. Posters will also be hung throughout the building to remind everyone of the focus trait. Every student will receive a new bookmark each month that reflects the trait. Staff will have ample opportunity to introduce and reinforce the concepts. Students who consistently demonstrate the trait will receive a character certificate recognizing their good character. Their names will be entered into a drawing each month. Fifty of those names will be chosen to participate in the Character Club Activity of the Month. Activities may include a craft, project, or service that will benefit a community group, such as nursing homes, veterans, our school, and shut-ins. We believe that these actions will reinforce the concepts we are teaching. For our Student of the Month program, a student from every classroom may be chosen for that honor instead of one per grade level as in years past. Students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the focus trait will be chosen. They will have their names on the Character Education Wall for the school year. This enables our school to recognize ALL students for their exceptional behavior. At the end of the school year, the Good Citizens selected at that time will have their names added to a Good Citizen Wall of Fame. These students will have demonstrated excellent citizenship throughout the school year. Elementary School students are still invited to wear their Character Education t-shirts to school on the first Friday of each month.
