Athletic Activities (coaches’ names are in parentheses): Boys’ Basketball – 7th grade (Dan Orbaker), 8th grade (Chad DeRock) Girls’ Basketball – 7th grade (Jason Cole), 8th grade (Dan Orbaker) Modified Wrestling Modified Boys’ Soccer (Justin Tese) Modified Girls’ Soccer (Amy Ostrom) Modified Cross Country (Steve Choi) Modified Tennis (Josh Weatherall) Modified Track (Kellie Burke) Modified Volleyball Modified sports are a precursor to the JV and Varsity programs for students at the 7th and 8th grade levels. The programs generally run concurrently with the JV or Varsity seasons. The practices are usually from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Game times vary. Boys’ Basketball Intramurals This activity generally takes place in the winter. This is a great way to cultivate interest in the sport and keep the interest going when the season is over. 7th and 8th Grade Gymnastics Intramurals This activity takes place in the form of a gymnastics club that occurs at the Elementary School and is open to students in grades 5-8. Many students have been involved in this program for several years. (Lisa Campbell) Softball Intramurals This activity takes place in the spring. It is for students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in softball, but do not play on the JV or varsity teams. We do not have a modified team in this sport yet, so this is a great way to cultivate an interest. Girls Volleyball Intramurals This activity takes place in the winter or spring and is for students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in volleyball. The activity keeps the interest in volleyball going when the season is over and is also a great way to cultivate interest in the sport. Extracurricular Activities (advisors’ names are in parentheses): JV Masterminds/Chess Club This is a jeopardy-style program with students practicing and competing with students from other schools. Chess club is a large component of the JV program. (Julie Wantuck) Middle School Student Council This is the student government for the middle school. Each grade has representatives that meet regularly to plan activities and events. The Middle School generally sponsors some dances, contributes to charities, and is involved in Middle School spirit activities. (Kellie Burke) Middle School Yearbook Students work with the advisors to actually design the Middle School yearbook for the school year. Students typically stay after school periodically to work on it. There also may be some evening or weekend meetings in completing the yearbook. (Kathy Monks/Mark Thomas) Musical The musical is for students in grades 7–12. Students need to try-out for a part in the musical. Try-outs take place in November; practices begin at the end of January and run through the musical performance in March. Practices generally run from 2:30 to 3:05 p.m. or from 3:15 until around 5 p.m. One day of weekend practice generally occurs in February and March. (Dan Burke) National Junior Honor Society Students in the NJHS have met criteria for induction in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. These students generally do service projects in the school and community throughout the year. (Kelly Evans) Newspaper This is a student run newspaper. Up to five issues are published yearly. Students come up with the ideas for the articles, research and write the articles as well as lay out the newspaper. Grades 7-12 (Kellie Burke) Odyssey of the Mind This group meets generally in the evenings to get ready for regional competitions. It is open to students in all grades. Our teams have done very well in the past and have won regional competitions. (Karen Quaranto) Spanish Club This is a very popular club. Students meet about once a month with the advisor to plan and participate in activities, such as the Halloween hayride, Holiday Fiesta, Cinco de Mayo celebration, dances, etc. (Tammy Menzie/Kathy Monks) Technology Club Students will again attend Tech Wars at Genesee Community College after a successful trip last year. The club will also do building projects, such as a play house, which they can raffle when complete. Students are encouraged to take the club in whatever direction they choose. (Tim Rogers)
