National Honor Society (NHS)

Students are first eligible for consideration for membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) at the beginning of their junior year of high school. If their cumulative average for their ninth and 10th grade years is 90.0 or higher, and they are working towards a diploma, then they will be given a candidate for membership packet in late September or early October of their junior year. If the candidate attains a 90.0 cumulative average from their first three years of high school (ninth-11th grades), the candidate will be eligible for membership at the beginning of their senior year. The membership packet will provide the faculty council information on the candidate's leadership, service and character traits that are required for membership.

The induction ceremony for NHS is traditionally the last day before Thanksgiving break, when the students are called down for an assembly during the last period of the day. This is when the candidates find out whether or not they have been inducted.

The NHS is a community service based group that engages in several local activities. They assist the local community center at Thanksgiving time, Christmas time, and Easter time by preparing food baskets and helping them distribute them to families in need in the area. They also participate in the Salvation Army bell ringing at Christmas time. Along with the Holley cheerleaders, NHS members donate money raised to needy families at Christmas time. In addition, NHS members participate in any activities that may come along throughout the year.  They often receive phone calls and letters requesting help for various things. For example, NHS members usually help out with the elementary school Field Days at the end of the year, when it does not interfere with studying for final exams.

NHS hosts one big fundraiser around the end of January, when Billy Martin's Cole All Star Circus comes to town. This fundraiser usually helps raise enough money for members to do what they plan for throughout the year.
